Working from home.

Most of my career has been spent in corporate America.  The majority of corporate America workplaces like for their employees to work from said workplace. Even when I was working for Verizon, and they were advertising how their services help people be connected from anywhere, they preferred for us to be connected to them via our desk inside their building.  I get it, a lot of people who claim to work from home might not work as much as they do when in the office, under supervision.  I happen to be someone who gets more work done at home than I do in the office.  I don’t know why.  It might be that I overcompensate to be sure work knows I’m plugging away but honestly, I think it’s just due to fewer distractions.

This past week I worked from home some.  On day one, the boys didn’t really know what to make of it so they spent a lot of time staring at me and following me every time I moved a nano-inch.  That drove me nuts didn’t bother me at all. But by day two, they got tired of staring at my piercing beauty and went about their way.  For Melvin, this was no different from any other day.  He has the house to himself when I’m at work so he just pretended to have the house to himself with me home.  Jake on the other hand tried to make good use of every single spot except his usual daytime hangout, the mudroom. That room was dead to him.

For the most part it went great.  There are a few things that need some tweaking should this continue.

  1. Melvin barked at every noise, even fake noises and noises that occurred in Europe that he sorta think he could have perhaps heard.  When Melvin barks, Jake barks double and scurries around on his wonky legs pretending he can see out the window and that something is most definitely out there so he keeps honking.  When I’m not home I leave the noise machine on for them but white noise during the day DRIVES ME FLIPPEN BONKERS and I refuse to have the TV on while I work because daytime TV lowers IQ (true story).  Anywhoo, I put music on but even rifts in the music made Melvin bark.
  2. I need to leave the house at some point each day (aside from dog walks).  My guess is the unibomber worked from home and never took breaks away from his cabin.

And now, I give you my assistants.  They are the worst, most cutest workers ever.  There is also a shot of my outdoor office where the assistants did even less work than they did inside.

  1. 1. If I worked from your home, I’d probably get a lot done. You have the cutest workspace ever (LOVE the rollerskate… WANT the rollerskate).
    2. Cutest co-workers EVAH. Although I can attest that anything with four-legs are horribly unproductive and can’t even collate (I mean, seriously?).
    3. Try listening to Paul Simon’s “Graceland” on repeat. I got so much work done on my thesis to that album. In fact, now whenever I need to get something done and I’m dragging my feet, I put on that album and it immediately gets my butt in gear.
    4. Happy working from home now, consultant lady!

    • I’m getting you the roller-skate, done and doner! And as for #2, that is true but what they are REALLY good at is un-collating (de-collating?)!

  2. I would love to work from home more, BUT my youngest and largest son has recently taken to BARKING whenever he is bored (which is like all the time, despite having a million toys and unlimited access to the back yard where there are sticks to death and dirt to roll in).

    • The majority of last week was trying to get a plan in place for Jake’s next chapter with his legs and pee issues. The pee stuff drives me bonkers but I think I can honestly say that constant barking is worse! I have a new plan today, every time there is unnecessary barking at nothing, I walk them out of the office, close the glass doors and give them a one minute time out. Then they can come back in. We’ll see!

  3. I’m very lucky to work from home, but like you say it does come with its compromises and annoyingly cute interruptions. Nevertheless, I wouldn’t trade it and I think I overall get more work done here.

  4. I would love to either work from home, or work in an office environment that allowed me to bring my dog(s) to work. I think Julius would still opt for daycare, but Ray would be a good office assistant. Unfortunately not too many banks allow for this.
PS I love their little wicker lounger!

  5. Working from home is such a huge treat! I will totally agree with you about leaving the house every single day – it can be isolating to feel stuck in your home all day, no matter how much you love it.

  6. I telework one day a week and find myself getting a LOT of work done on that day. I think I’m relaxed, happy, distraction free – the list goes on. The pups love it!

  7. My human daddy travels for work, but when he’s not out of town he works from home. I totally adore assisting him. I especially like conference calls. They make me so sleepy. I’m sure a lot of humans can relate. 🙂

  8. Working form home is fabulous! I do that myself and to be honest, I get far more done. I think like you said it is down to less distractions, so the fact that I don’t have to talk to anybody unless I want to sites me down to the ground. As for the 4 legged fellows, once they get used to the fact that you being at home means no stimulation to later on that day, they will just ignore you.

  9. I wish I could work from home on a regular basis. At a previous job I could do it once in a while, and the pups loved it.
